Sustainability

Sustainability and corporate social responsibility are important to all our business operations. Our employees, the environment and the local community play an important role in this. Our company and our products are Fairtrade, Global Gap, KFC-silver and MPS-A certified. We aim to improve our sustainability continuously.

Bilashaka Flowers is located in a beautiful and valuable natural area. It is of great importance to produce responsibly, in balance with the natural resources such as water and soil. We collect rainwater from all our greenhouse roofs in large basins for reuse. Because of this “water harvesting”, we decrease the water requirement from the lake considerably.

As one of the few farms in Kenya, we grow the majority of our roses on hydroponics. This reduces our water and fertilizer needs. By using substrate cultivation and 100% drain water recirculation, we have limited interaction with the soil and all water is (re)used efficiently.

We also use solar energy to heat the greenhouses in the morning. As a result, fungal diseases do not infest the crops and the use of pesticides is reduced. In addition, solar panels have been installed on top of our company buildings to generate electricity. This allows us to provide more than half of our daily energy requirements.

It is of great importance that our employees are satisfied and can work in a safe and pleasant environment. This is one of the reasons why we offer our employees a free lunch every day. In addition, our employees receive free health insurance for their families. We offer training courses for the development of new crop production activities and, via the Fairtrade program, also offer trainings in the field of personal development.

As one of the larger employers in the region, we aim to contribute to the development of the local community. Together with local partners, Bilashaka Flowers founded the St. Andrew’s Tarabete Secondary School in 2009. Nowadays, the school provides education for over 600 students. The school has a positive effect on future opportunities for young Kenyans. Bilashaka Flowers also invests in the local medical clinic and in the drinking water supply for the neighbouring village.
